Vis-à-vis her Detroit-Berlin imprint, Salt & Cedar, Megan O’Connell has generated letterpress editions that have been collected in archives and museums, and created live for visitors in sites such as MoMA, Third Man Records and the Balvenie Rare Craft Collection - curated by Anthony Bourdain. Letterform is both source and subject of her practice, as she collaborates with an international roster of artists and writers. In 2018-19 she was artist-in-residence at p98a.berlin, producing editions in legacy German, Italian and French fonts.
O’Connell holds an MFA in Intermedia from the University of Iowa [1994], where she studied with Hans Breder. After graduating, she was offered a teaching fellowship that eventually turned into a long-term position at the University of Oregon. As Director of the Typography Lab for a dozen years, she grew the program exponentially.
