During the summer months, I meet people who don't touch their precious single malts at all. Sometimes it's because they see whisky as a winter drink, other times it's because they say their single malt is sacred, that it should never be mixed with anything, or even served with ice.

As I write this I am in my usual seat, 35,000 feet above sea level and en route to my next whisky adventure. Today I am off to Alaska, making this my tenth flight and fifth American state visited in the past three weeks. Needless to say, I am sure my chosen airline is very happy with my consecutive years of reaching their top tier due to my jetsetter lifestyle. I sometimes think that the TSA agents know me better than my wife! If you have ever been to one of our tastings you may have heard me talking about the importance of nosing a whisky. Nosing the whisky is very important to enhance your overall tasting experience. Some scientists claim as much as 80-90% of the flavor you experience is attributed to your sense of smell (olfactory system). This phenomenon of flavor perception is known as “referral of retronasal odors to the mouth”.
