The last (but certainly not least) arrival to this summer’s Glenfiddich Residency is Arturo Alcazar from Mexico. Although Arturo is based in his native Mexico city he is something of an artist nomad spending equal amounts of time in Europe, in particular Berlin. His artistic practice is equally difficult to pin down firmly, being part performance, part sculptural.

Krupa is the latest recipient of the Glenfiddich/BestCollegeArt Emerging Indian Artist of the Year Award, which she received at a public reception in the luxurious surroundings of the Oberoi Hotel, Gurgaon earlier on this year.
The latest resident to arrive at The Glenfiddich Distillery is Han Seok Hyun, our forth Korean resident and once again selected with kind assistance Suzie Lee of the Inverness St. Gallery in Camden.
Ecology is central to Seok Hyun’s art and for the past few years he has been ‘growing’ trees using timber donated by members of the public or salvaged from skips and dumping grounds. Old, unwanted pieces of furniture, pallets, packaging crates, broken and smashed, are all recycled by the artist into living, growing sculptural pieces which acknowledge the majestic contortions of ancient trees, twisted and gnarled with the passage of time.
Beating his wings harder and harder, Icarus soared up into the sky and out over the Aegean Sea. It was hard to believe the plan had worked. For here he was now, flying alongside his father Daedulus, as they left the island of Crete behind them and travelled on towards their freedom. Icarus glanced over his shoulder at his father and grinned.
“Come along, Father,” he shouted over the sound of the wind rushing past them. “Smile, we’ve done it ! we’ve escaped! We’re free !
Now that we are a few weeks in to this summer’s residency period the evolution of creativity is for some of the early arrivals well into the fermentation stage. Initial reactions to the new environment experienced by the artists give birth to brew of thoughts and ideas which then have to be distilled down to their essence.

Having travelled from just outside Madrid, Daniel is a close friend of last year’s Spanish artist Suso33. Although he comes from the same street art background as Suso, Daniel now prefers drawing for his medium of creative expression.

It was also a bit of a shock to the system for Chang Huei-ming, arriving in to Aberdeen from the more clement climes of Taipei that same day.

The Glenfiddich Distillery is delighted to announce the line of artists taking part in this year’s residency programme.
Now in its fourteenth year we once again have invited an exciting group of artists from around the world to spend three months in the heart of Speyside to be inspired and create.

Christmas has always been a special time at Glenfiddich. It was after all on a Christmas day morning in 1887 that the first drop of spirit ran from our stills. So for the past few years we have always tried to do something a little different to mark the occasion. We have already had a Christmas tree made from three hundred and sixty five Glenfiddich bottles, and seen curled shavings of cask staves transformed into angel wings. But for 2014 the idea was to encompass the joy of giving by gift wrapping something precious, a cask of pure Glenfiddich spirit!
It’s Halloween and the spirits on the loose! There are reports that strange apparitions, ghostly faces and figures have appeared in shadows of some of the quieter corners not far from The Glenfiddich Distillery.
The last week of September sees Dufftown host the annual autumn whisky festival which over the years has become a popular event, bringing visitors from far and wide to the town. And so in keeping with recent tradition it is also the weekend we open the final exhibition of each summer’s residency.
Although the past week has seen the artistic cohort at Glenfiddich thin down somewhat with the departure of several residents, but with four still on site and the final exhibition of new work scheduled for end of this month, things are not much quieter.
As one door closes another always opens. Might not be straight away though and in the case of turn round times between residency exhibitions at Glenfiddich it is around four and half days. With our first exhibition closing on Sunday 17th August there was a lot of work to do to prepare for the private view of the second one the following Friday.
