The first artist to arrive at Glenfiddich this summer also happens to be our first from Australia. Sydney based Joan Ross was selected for the open call held there last summer and was formally announced for the 2016 programme at the Sydney Contemporary Art fair held over four days last September. Born in Glasgow, Joan’s parents emigrated down under when she was still an infant and although she has previously returned to the ‘old country ‘ the residency will be her longest stay in Scotland since childhood.
The Glenfiddich Distillery is proud to announce the fifteenth year of its acclaimed International Residency Programme. Once again eight visual artists from around the globe are preparing to each spend three months in residence at The Glenfiddich Distillery. Next week will see the first of them start to arrive and as ever it is shaping up to be an eclectic year.
The Glenfiddich team in Taipei have been supporting our returning residents for over a decade now and as ever the exhibitions held IT Park, our selection partners in Taiwan are always a must be seen at event on the Taipei social circuit. For 2015 it was the turn of Chang Huei- Ming to present his latest works under the collective title of Tough Town, taken from the name of the film work he completed at Glenfiddich over the summer.
As the dark winter nights fast approach and envelop Glenfiddich for the next few months the focus of the artists in residence programme switches to more temperate climes with some of the years residents share their summer’s experiences with audiences back in their home countries. First of these special returning exhibitions opened on Saturday 7th November in the space of our Shanghai based selection partner, Don Gallery, showcasing the works of Su Chang.
Each year since 2007 the third exhibition of the season has always coincided with Dufftown’s Autumn Whisky Festival and as such always marks the wind down of our residency season. However it is rare that the opening denotes such a clearly defined full stop to the year. Even after the September opening it is not uncommon for artists to still be on site for two or three weeks after, sometimes even longer in the case of Rhonda Weppler who returned for an additional months stay in the winter of 2014.
With just over a week to go before the final opening for the year things are heating up for Arturo in the most literal sense. Having initially experimented with ‘smoking’ canvases in the Balvenie kiln Arturo turned his attention to Convalmore distillery situated close to his house on the Glenfiddich site. Established in 1894 the Convalmore - Glenlivet Distillery had a chequered history, changing hands twice in the first twelve years of its existence it suffered a disastrous fire in 1909. Once rebuilt it became fitted with an experimental use of column stills for the continuous distilling of malt spirit. However this never really proved to be successful and was abandoned within five years. Closed completely in 1985 it was decommissioned and all the distilling equipment cut up and removed for scrap before being bought by William Grants and Sons for its warehousing capacity in 1990.
With the second show up and running the start of the month saw a massive exodus of departing artists heading home with Jon, Su, Seok Hyun, Ben and Daniel all leaving on the same day, leaving only Arturo and Krupa in residence working towards their final presentation scheduled for end of September. However even as the residency year draws to a close the sights are already being focused on 2016.
After an incredibly frantic fortnight it is always a pleasure to enjoy the few moments of peace and tranquillity just before the gallery opens its doors to a new exhibition. With all the work installed and the glasses laid out time seems to slow down giving an opportunity to draw breath, relax and fully appreciate the works on display.

Jon Sasaki, January 2015
When Jon drafted these words into his application for the Glenfiddich residency he probably thought no one in their right mind would ever allow him to try and build his own aircraft, never mind fund it.
With the twin deadlines of the second exhibition and departure time just round the corner it has been a packed week for the Glenfiddich artists. For those such as Jon Sasaki, Ben Martin and Seok Hyun the focus is very much on completing works for the opening where as for Daniel who has already exhibited the last few days of his residency are an opportunity to squeeze in as much as possible.
Read More >August is a busy time at Glenfiddich, not only is our visitor centre thronging with holiday makers and travellers from far afield, it is also socially busy for the residency programme with artists families and friends all arriving for visits. One very welcome arrival was Suso33 who was in residence last summer and was keen to return to see his old friend, this summer’s Spanish resident Daniel Munoz.
Brandishing a fine selection of chorizo and pueblo tobacco as gifts Suso arrived into Aberdeen to warm sunshine and no baggage thanks to a rushed connection between Madrid and Amsterdam.
Not surprisingly for a family company we always encourage our resident artists to have friends and family visit while at Glenfiddich. So joining Seok Hyun for the last few weeks of his stay were his wife Hukaka and son, Jimu. By good timing they arrived just as the plans for the sitting of Seok Hyun’s work were being finalised and so in true William Grant spirit they were quickly pressed into service on the project.
The doors have officially opened on the first of our summer residency exhibitions. After a dull and damp start to the day the skies cleared to allow the guests attending our private view on Friday a pleasant evening. On display was a number of new works by three of our residents, Su Chang, Daniel Munoz and Chang Hieu-ming.
Read More >Three months can seem a like an eternity when at the start of residence, but the long weeks soon become short days as the deadline for first opening approaches. Like the other artists exhibiting in this coming exhibition, Daniel Munoz has been busy putting the final touches to the works he shall be submitting even though these works won’t actually be in the gallery themselves.
Read More >July might only be the mid way point of the overall residency period, but for Huei-ming, who arrived at the start of May, it marks the closing stages of his three month stay at Glenfiddich. Yet for now the focus is now firmly on completing work for our first exhibition where he along with two other fellow artists in residence - Daniel Munoz and Su Chang, will have the opportunity to share the fruit of their labour with visitors to The Glenfiddich Distillery.
