Liao Chien Chung

Taiwan

Born in 1972, Liao Chien-Chung is a sculptor and installation artist based in Taipei. In recent years, he has applied carpentry techniques exercised from the past decade to his artistic practice. With precision and craftsmanship in the woodwork, he vividly replicates the machines or vehicles seen in our urban livelihood, which deceive the viewers with the realistic yet functionless surface of the objects. Liao Chien-Chung’s selected recent exhibitions include: “Madou Sugar Industry Art Triennial”, Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center, Tainan (2019), “The Fourth Age of Man-Contemporary Art in Jinguashi”, Gold Museum, New Taipei (2018), “Towards the land of two lights”, IT PARK, Taipei (solo exhibition, 2017), and “Yes Taiwan---Taiwan Biennial”, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2014).

My works explore the ambiguous relationship between the replicas and the real objects in our everyday lives. Whereas the original objects possess their functions and symbols, the replicas further amplify the symbolic connotation of the objects by imitating their surface while depriving the functions. The façade, is the catalyst that stimulates the viewers to re-examine their environment, a calling for them to re-interpret the surroundings that we are accustomed to, and a resistance to comply with our modern society.
