Newling uses high-control techniques like screen and digital printing to make his work. He also draws heavily from graphic and commercial design. He carefully extracts experience from a contemporary landscape of industrially manufactured objects such as disposable cups, roofing, microwaves, non-slip floors, street lamps and electric heaters.
At Glenfiddich he will continue this style of work with elements borrowed from the distillery environment. By creating objects that 'stand-in' as surrogates, probing within the ghosts of industrial production, he produces moments of seduction and mood that absorb the hard-nosed practicality of the world and propose something altogether more remote, tongue-tied and slippery.
