Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1970, Romeo studied Biomedical Engineering and Photography at Tulane University in New Orleans before going onto achieve an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Working across a number of different media including drawing, print, animation and film making, Romeo has exhibited widely across America and Europe. He is currently creating new work based on a subverted form of the standardized “Rorschach Test.” Unlike the standard Rorschach Test, however, Romeo’s "inverted" Rorschach drawings are not meant to be neutral. Hidden within these ink blots are images of conflict and paradox, some referencing Scotland’s often turbulent history. Not immediately obvious, these hidden images, once discovered, are impossible to disregard.
“This residency provided me with four of the basic essentials for inspired art making: Time, Space, Materials, and Scotch (the first three of which are extremely hard to come by in New York). I embraced the isolation (and the Scotch) necessary to produce a complete body of work based on the wonderful and sometimes paradoxical turns of history and ideology in this great country. I am forever grateful to be able to have the support needed to face these angels and demons (including my own) without the typical distractions that life presents.”
